Study shows AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine works well as third booster

A new study has indicated that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine works well as a third booster dose.

According to the study, the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine as a third booster dose helps to step up antibodies to the coronavirus spike protein.

As reported by Financial Times, the antibody reaction among participants in the study to the third booster shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine was “strong enough against any variant” and put to rest fears that adenoviruses could not be used more than once.

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine makes use of a new technology employing a modified version of adenoviruses, which cause the common cold, as vectors to ferry instructions to human cells.

This design of the vaccine led to concern among scientists that the doses could lose potency if annual inoculations become necessary to fight new variants.

Recall that vaccine makers have recently alerted that there may be a need for yearly booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine to fight new variants and ensure protection.

Pfizer CEO, Albert Bourla had last month stated that people will likely need a booster COVID-19 vaccine dose 12 months after getting fully vaccinated, noting that there may also be annual revaccination.

However, researchers said, with millions of people yet to get vaccinated globally, discussions about COVID-19 third dose and revaccination will have to be delayed till enough data is available.

It is not known yet when Oxford and AstraZeneca plan to publish data from the new study, according to Financial Times.
