The controversy arose when the hamburger franchise ‘Burger King’ announced that it would stop selling its signature ‘Whopper Series’.
Burger King has since posted a notice suggesting a “renewal” of the Whopper menu without any explanation.
Burger King announced on its website and app on the 8th that it will end the sale of the Whopper on the 14th.
Burger King said, “Burger King’s Whopper will end sales after 40 years,” adding, “The Burger King Whopper, which started in 1984 at Jongno, laughed and cried with Koreans. Please join us for the end of the Whopper by April 14th.”
The Whopper is Burger King’s signature dish that features a “100% beef patty” grilled over an open flame and was developed in the United States in 1957. It has been introduced in Korea since 1984 when the Jongno branch opened, and it was a highly symbolic menu.
In response to Burger King’s announcement, users couldn’t hide their bewilderment, saying, “Is it an April Fool’s event that has passed the season?”, “Burger King without a Whopper is meaningless”, and “Burger King without a Whopper is McDonald’s without a Big Mac”.
Some online speculated that there might be a “Whopper Season 2” that removed the original Whopper menu and renewed it. In the case of overseas Burger King stores, there is no news of the discontinuation of the Whopper, and the reasons for the discontinuation such as the increase in cost are not explained in detail, so it is not the actual end of sales.
One online community wrote, “You said you’re going to sprinkle salt on your patties from the 15th? Whopper buns and burger buns are also changed with more sesame seeds.” This led to the prospect of a new burger with a different recipe, such as changing the patty and burger bun.
In response to inquiries from consumers, Burger King stores announced that they would continue to sell Whoppers after the 14th.
Afterwards, Burger King’s headquarters said on its website, without any explanation, “It is correct that we are currently discontinuing the sale of the Whopper. Please look forward to the various promotions we are preparing for the 40th anniversary of the Whopper,” the re-announcement was posted, hinting at the renewal.
