Alfie Gilchrist ‘completes’ Chelsea move after breakthrough campaign.
Alfie Gilchrist’s breakthrough season at Chelsea has continued with the defender making the permanent move to the first-team dressing room at Cobham earlier this month.
The 20-year-old, who joined Chelsea’s youth ranks in 2014 and recently signed a new long-term deal, has enjoyed a breakout season with Mauricio Pochettino’s side since making his Premier League debut in the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace in December. Since then, he has made a further six appearances for the Blues.
Last week, though, Gilchrist’s campaign reached a new high as he was moved to Chelsea’s senior dressing room on a full-time basis, with his new-look locker revealed by team-mate Noni Madueke on social media.
“My brother. Congrats gg,” read Madueke’s Instagram story, revealing the latest feat of Gilchrist’s impressive season in West London.
“The moment I came on was amazing,” said Gilchrist in an interview with Chelseafc.com, reflecting on his debut. “My first touch was a good tackle and my second was just a smash. That’s what you’ve got to do, make sure the first thing you do is positive, and from there, you hope, it will take care of itself.
“As soon as I put the big challenge in I just heard the whole crowd erupt so I just got up and went again to try and get it, make another tackle or block.
“I’d been on the bench a few times this year and when it did come to the moment when he called me over, it was just like “this is it”. You always have to prepare and have the right mindset to be ready just in case you do have the chance to come on. I just wanted to take my chance and I was full of energy.”
