Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim has got plenty out of his new squad, but the Portuguese doesn’t want to overlook the impact made by Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy wasn’t back at Manchester United for too long, but his impact on winger Amad has been noticed by Ruben Amorim.
Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford over the summer as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff. He took interim charge of the first team for four matches after Ten Hag’s sacking, remaining unbeaten, but left when new head coach Amorim took the reins and is now in charge at Leicester.
The new boss is also unbeaten, picking up four points from two league matches and beating Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. Everton were United’s latest victims on Sunday, with Amad setting up two of the four goals.
Amorim reflected on scorers Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee after the 4-0 victory. However, he also had a bit to say about Amad – specifically the way in which Van Nistelrooy helped the Ivorian develop.

“He is really big in talent, but small in size,” Amorim told Match of the Day when speaking about Amad. “He did a great job but he is also has to improve. He is a great moment. Ruud van Nistelrooy helped him a lot in his games in charge and now he’s helping me.”
Amorim refused to get carried away about the display as a whole, though, suggesting a change in the dugout can improve things but noting there’s more to be done. “We have to be very clear to our fans and this will always help,” he added.
“Rather than trying to convince the fans about this performance we have a lot to do, it will take time. Sometimes we are not playing well but defended everyone together. Our fans just ask for hard work and then in time they will ask for better football.”

Rashford has scored in both league games under Amorim, opening the scoring against Ipswich and scoring the first two against Everton. Speaking after the match, the England international also had nothing but praise for Amad, who has quickly found his feet under the new boss.
“It wasn’t as easy as it looked today,” Rashford said. “Amad did well to counter-press for two of the goals. He’s so sharp and he’s always got the intent to push the other team back, with and without the ball. It is for the players to understand the strengths of other players so we can feed off each other.
“We worked on it [the first goal] yesterday and it is always nice when something comes off that you worked off. It was a nice goal. The all-round team performance and energy and atmosphere is what we want to create because it makes it difficult for teams to beat us.
“He [Ruben Amorim] is definitely demanding but encouragement to bring your strengths into the game. That is when you get a really good team performance. Hopefully we can build on this and keep pushing. It’s nothing to get overly excited by. We have to keep pushing every day to meet his demands.”
