Over 11.9% withheld for malpractice as WAEC announces 2024 SSCE results

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has commenced the release of results for its 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) for school candidates.

The 2024 WASSCE was held for a period of seven weeks and six days spanning April 30 to June 24.

A total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 secondary schools across Nigeria.

Of this number, 1,805,216 candidates sat the examination.

Out of the total number of candidates that sat the exam in Nigeria, 1,685,889 candidates (93.39 percent) have all their papers processed and released while 119,327 candidates (representing 6.61 percent) have some subjects still being processed.

Amos Josiah Dangut, head of WAEC Nigeria, said the results of 215,267 candidates (representing 11.92 percent of the total) are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

This, the council said, amounts to a 4.37 percent decrease from the 16.29 percent recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates.

A performance analysis shows that 1,332,089 candidates (representing 73.79 percent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (with or without English and/or Mathematics).

A total of 1,301,941 candidates (representing 72.12 percent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Year-on-year comparison for this category reveals that the 2024 WASSCE saw a 7.69 percent decrease from the 79.81 percent pass rate recorded in 2023.
