There was also no magic from Dortmund star Erlin Haaland, who City neutralized during the game.

Speaking on BT Sport, Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said: ” It means a lot- this club and this team deserve it.

“We are grateful for reaching the semi-finals for the first time with this team, we are obviously very happy about it.

“Today was, once again, about showing character – I don’t think we played well in the first 15 mins, we struggled and seemed a bit scared.

“After conceding we started to get into the game, held more possession and kept the ball.

“We created a couple of chances in the first half and our target at half-time was to score the first goal in the second half, get the game back in our hands and that’s exactly what we did – I’m proud of that.

“We know how tough this competition is – everyone has quality, the opponents are so difficult.

“This Dortmund team are able to beat anyone on a good day and we saw that in the first half.”
