Earlier this week, reports emerged claiming that Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could finally make his comeback from injury after the next month’s international break.
The Catalan derby against Girona, set to be played on the weekend of September 14-15, was pencilled in for the Netherlands international’s return after more than five months.
However, now, RAC1 has come forward with a rather grim update surrounding Frenkie de Jong and his ankle issue.
While there may be a possibility of him returning to action in September, Barcelona are concerned that even a small blow to his ankle or a bad movement could put him on the sidelines again.
Indeed, it is claimed that the 27-year-old’s ankle is very tender and fragile and he suffers from chronic instability in the region.
A small blow or a strong tackle could end up causing a relapse even though he can return in a few weeks.
As such, even though De Jong is working to strengthen the affected area, he can never be at 100% fitness level unless he undergoes surgery to address his ankle issue.
It would be the only viable option to completely clean up the affected area and thus leave behind the problems of instability in the ligament.
Naturally, Barcelona are very concerned about the situation, more so after Marc Bernal’s season-ending ACL injury, which has left the team short on options in midfield.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has already accused Barça of rushing De Jong back early from a previous injury last season. As such, all eyes will be on how the club deals with the midfielder’s current predicament.
