Arsenal and Man City… ‘Eliminated’ Tottenham want to finish fourth in UCL

Arsenal and Man City… ‘Eliminated’ Tottenham want to finish fourth in UCL

Premier League Tottenham‘s chances of qualifying for the UCL are shrinking.

Bayern Munich beat Arsenal 1-0 in the second leg of the 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League round of 8 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on the 18th (Korean time).

Bayern Munich, who had a 2-2 aggregate score in the first leg, won 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-finals. Manchester City drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the second leg of the round of eight at the Manchester City of Manchester Stadium in England, and went into a penalty shootout after extra time.

However, City lost 3-4 as Bernardo Silva and Matteo Kovacic missed. With two teams from the Premier League (PL) eliminated, Tottenham is also facing a crisis. Tottenham are in a fierce battle with Aston Villa for fourth place to qualify for the UEFA UCL.

Starting from the 2024-2025 season, the UEFA UCL will be expanded from 32 teams to 36 teams. Therefore, there is a lot of interest in who will be the protagonist of the additional four chapters. Of the four places, one will be given to the fifth-ranked team in the UEFA rankings, while the other will be given to the league outside the top five.

The other two spots are given to the two leagues with the best UEFA average. UEFA average performances are based on the performance of teams in each league in UEFA competitions this season. To date, the league with the highest UEFA coefficient is Italy’s Serie A with 18.428 points. It is followed by the German Bundesliga (16.785) and the Premier League (16.750).

Especially since Bayern Munich beat Arsenal to reach the last four, the Bundesliga’s score is likely to be even higher.

On the other hand, with Arsenal and Man City eliminated together, the PL failed to add any points.

Tottenham, who are currently in a fierce battle for the top spot, have increased their pressure. If they fail to finish fourth, their chances of qualifying for the UCL could be slim.

Of course, West Ham and Liverpool are still alive in the Europa League, while Aston Villa are still alive in the Europa Conference League, so they can move up the rankings. However, Tottenham will likely need to finish fourth in order to take on a new challenge.
