The historic guilty verdict against Donald Trump is showing the first effects on the polls for the presidential election on November 5. According to a survey by the HarrisX Institute, 43 percent of US voters would still choose Trump, with incumbent Joe Biden just behind with 42 percent. 14 percent of those surveyed say they are unsure. A total of 1006 people were surveyed from May 30 to 31. The statistical margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
Trump was found guilty of all 34 counts in New York on Thursday for concealing hush money to star Stormy Daniels. It is the first time in the history of the United States that a former US president has been held criminally accountable.
“Wall Street Journal” – Verdict against Trump was abuse of law
Even for moderate forces, Donald Trump’s conviction in the hush money trial makes a dubious statement about legal neutrality in the US, writes the Wall Street Journal:
“This time, the (Republican) Senators (Mitt) Romney, (Mitch) McConnell and (Susan) Collins are among the critics, as are those of us media representatives who are otherwise often critical of Trump. Perhaps they see the case as the egregious abuse of rights that it is. And they may be worried about the consequences for public trust in the rule of law if a statute-barred offence is twisted into a convoluted crime.
If the former president wants to win, he will stop raging about his fate and base the election on Biden’s record and his own plans for the next four years. For many Republicans the election of Trump is now more likely after seeing how the Democrats politicized the law to target an opposing presidential candidate.”
Trump has launched his own account on the video platform Tiktok. During his term as president, he had wanted to enforce a ban on the app of the China-based Bytedance group in the USA. On Saturday, Trump posted a 13-second clip of himself attending a martial arts event in Newark, New Jersey. Among other things, the 77-year-old can be seen entering the arena of the “Ultimate Fighting Championship 302” and waving to the crowd to the song “American Bad Ass” by Kid Rock. At the end he says: “Pretty good entry, isn’t it?” According to the app’s display, the short video had more than 33 million views after twelve hours.
