【Earthquake Information】Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture with a seismic intensity of less than 5 and no tsunami M5.1

and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is calling for caution for earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of less than 5 for the next week or so in areas where the shaking was strong.

In the earthquake that occurred around 10:25 a.m., tremors with a seismic intensity of less than 5 were observed in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and tremors with a seismic intensity of 4 were observed in Kushima City in Miyazaki Prefecture and Osaki Town and Kinko Town in Kagoshima Prefecture. In addition, the shaking of seismic intensity 3 was carried out in Miyazaki City, Miyakojo City, Mitsumata Town, and Takahara Town. Observations were made in Kagoshima City, Kanoya City, Tarumi City, Kirishima City, Minami-Satsuma City, Shibushi City, Aira City, Higashikushira Town, Minami-Osumi Town, and Hetsuki Town in Kagoshima Prefecture. In addition, tremors with a seismic intensity of 2 to 1 were observed over a wide area of Kyushu.

There was no tsunami caused by this earthquake.

According to observations by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was off the eastern coast of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, the depth of the epicenter was 39 km, and the magnitude of the earthquake was estimated to be 5.1.

This is the first time that a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5 has been observed in Miyazaki Prefecture since the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that occurred on October 2, and at that time, the epicenter was off the east coast of the Osumi Peninsula, and a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5 was observed in Nichinan City.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned that rockfalls and cliff slides may be more likely to occur in areas where the shaking was strong, and is calling for caution for earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of less than 5 for the next week or so.

《Railway》 Delayed to the Nichinan Line, Kyushu Shinkansen operates as usual

According to JR Kyushu, the earthquake has caused delays on the Nichinan Line, which runs in Miyazaki Prefecture, but it has not affected the operation of the Shinkansen or other railways.

Seismic intensity 5 weak Nichinan City Hall employee “Shocked with a thud, then shook sideways for about 10 seconds”

An employee of the crisis management office of Nichinan City Hall, Miyazaki Prefecture, who observed a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5, said, “The impact came, and then the shaking continued for about 10 seconds. The city is currently collecting information.

In addition, according to the Nichinan City Fire Department, there has been no information on damage so far, and the situation is being confirmed. The staff member who responded said, “I felt a strong side-to-side shaking for about 10 seconds, but there was no noticeable damage in the building.”

This is the first earthquake in Miyazaki Prefecture with a seismic intensity of less than 5 since October.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this is the first time that a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5 has been observed in Miyazaki Prefecture since the magnitude 5.9 earthquake with its epicenter near the eastern coast of the Osumi Peninsula on October 2. At this time, a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5 was observed in Nichinan City.

Miyazaki and Kagoshima in both prefectures have “no damage information”

According to the police and fire departments of Nichinan City and Kushima City, as well as Miyazaki City, Miyakojo City, Mitsumata Town, and Takahara Town, which observed seismic intensity 5 to 3 seismic intensity, as of 11:45 a.m., there was no information on damage caused by the earthquake.

According to the Kagoshima Prefectural Disaster Management Division, as of 11:50 a.m., there is no information on damage caused by the earthquake.

Expert: “The epicenter is outside the hypocenter area of the Nankai Trough earthquake”

Regarding the Nankai Trough megaearthquake, the Japanese government has set the expected epicenter area from Suruga Bay to Hyuga-nada, but according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this earthquake occurred outside the hypocenter area. When an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 or higher occurs in the hypocenter area of the Nankai Trough, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) will issue temporary information to investigate the possibility of a large earthquake occurring in the future, but this time the scale of the earthquake is small and the location of the epicenter is different

Regarding this earthquake, Professor Emeritus Nao Hirata of the University of Tokyo and chairman of the government’s Earthquake Investigation Committee said, “Earthquakes with tremors of about 5 on the seismic intensity of less than 5 have occurred in the past off the eastern coast of the Osumi Peninsula, so please be careful of earthquakes of the same magnitude for the next few days, especially for two or three days.” He said, “The epicenter of this earthquake is close to the epicenter area of the Nankai Trough earthquake, but it is outside.

On the other hand, in Hyuga-nada, which is next to the epicenter of this earthquake, large earthquakes of magnitude 7 have repeatedly occurred in the past, causing damage. In 1968, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred, and a tsunami of up to 3 meters was observed in Shikoku. An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred in Showa 59 (1984) and an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred in Heisei 8 (1996). Recently, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 occurred in May 2019 and a tremor with a seismic intensity of less than 5 was observed in Miyazaki City and other areas, and an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 occurred in January 2019, and tremors with a maximum seismic intensity of 5 or more were observed in Miyazaki and Oita prefectures.

The government’s Earthquake Research and Promotion Headquarters estimates that there is an 80% probability that an earthquake of magnitude 7 to 7.5 will occur in Hyuga-nada within the next 30 years.

Kenji Satake, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute, who is familiar with the mechanisms of earthquakes and tsunamis, said, “We do not know at this point whether this earthquake will directly affect a larger earthquake, but since this is an area where magnitude 7 earthquakes have occurred in the past, we hope that this will be an opportunity to reconfirm our preparedness for shaking and tsunamis.”

《Nuclear Power Plant》Seismic intensity 2 Kawauchi Nuclear Power Plant in Satsuma Kawauchi City “No abnormality”

According to the Nuclear Regulation Authority, Units 1 and 2 of the Kawauchi Nuclear Power Plant in Satsuma-Kawauchi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, are in operation, and so far no abnormalities due to the earthquake have been confirmed. There is no change in the value of the monitoring post that measures the radiation dose in the vicinity. In this earthquake, a tremor with a seismic intensity of 2 was observed in Satsumagawanai City.

Government Established Information Liaison Office

In response to the earthquake, the government set up an information liaison office at the Crisis Management Center of the Prime Minister’s Office at 10:27 a.m. to check the damage.

Chief Cabinet Secretary: “We will continue to gather information”

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi said at a press conference in the morning, “The relevant ministries and agencies are continuing to collect information on human casualties and lifelines, and so far we have not received any reports of abnormalities at the nuclear facilities.” In addition, he said, “In areas where the shaking was strong, I would like you to pay attention to evacuation information provided by local governments, as well as information on television, radio, and the Internet.”
