UI Students Seek Support to Avoid Dropping Out as School Fees Deadline Approaches

With the September 20 deadline for school fee payments fast approaching, students at the University of Ibadan are turning to the public for help to avoid dropping out. Various student groups, including the University of Ibadan Student Union (UISU), along with the Faculties of Pharmacy and Nursing, and the Departments of Agronomy, Physiology, and Nutrition Science, have launched crowdfunding campaigns to assist their financially struggling members.

In a memo signed by UISU President Bolaji Aweda and Public Relations Officer Omotayo Olumide, the student union is appealing for 50 million naira to cover the fees of 500 students in just four days to meet the deadline. The memo states:

“**APPEAL FOR SUPPORT!!!** The recent hike in school fees at the University of Ibadan has left many students struggling to continue their education. For some, the dream of a better future now seems out of reach. But with your help, we can change that. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a life-changing difference.”

Similarly, the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students, University of Ibadan, has launched a separate appeal titled “Help UI Pharmacy Students Stay in School,” seeking 14 million naira to pay the fees for 100 students in the faculty. They cited the sharp increase in fees and the worsening economic situation as key reasons why many students are unable to afford their education.

Students from the Departments of Nutrition Science, Education, Physiology, and Agronomy have also made public appeals, fearing that many students may be unable to complete their online registrations, preventing them from sitting for exams set to begin on Monday, September 23. The school administration had previously announced a three-week break on August 31, requiring students to vacate their residence halls within six hours.
