Nigerians react as prison service opens magnificent hotel amidst dilapidated cells (Photos)

The Nigerian Correctional Service has sparked controversy after opening a magnificent hotel amid the dilapidating conditions of correctional facilities in the country.

The Service took to its official Facebook page on Monday evening to announce the birth of ‘COCOS Hotel and Gardens’ with photos of the magnificent twin structures of the facility and its different sections.

The buildings and other structures were painted in the colours of the Nigerian Correctional Service. NCoS, however, did not mention the location of the hotel and its modus operandi.

The 105-room hotel said to be an investment of the Correctional Service Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, was inaugurated by the immediate past Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, in 2021.

This comes when many correctional facilities are reported to have fallen short of the best standard.

Inmates are said to be held in dilapidated, overcrowded cells, leading to hazardous living conditions.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, recently stated that since the name of the Nigerian Prison Service was changed to Nigerian Correctional Service, there have been more jailbreaks in the country.

Unsatisfied with the images of the hotel, many users commented their frustration.

Sadeeq Shehu decried the modern facility in contrast to what he called prisons “built of mud”

He wrote, “While Nigerian Correctional Service (alias prisons) has a modern hotel, it has prisons built of mud. All Nigerian security agencies should be divested from all business ventures so that they can concentrate on the job.”

Sunday Peter Pepa opined that such an edifice is a deviation from the core objectives of the service.

“What is Nigerian Correctional service doing with hotel? This is a clear deviation from objectives. When there are so many challenges that require urgent attention in the prisons, this money should have been channeled to the appropriate areas,” he declared.

Okorie Uchenna wrote; “For VIP Prisoners like, Ministers and Senators.”

Akan Busayo wrote; “Something is wrong with the government we are having in this country, must a correctional service have an hotel for businesses? Very soon they will have restaurant”

AbdulKadir Muhd Alkafawy said; “The money they are supposed to renovate and improve the services of the correctional centers, is now money they are using for investment! When did correctional Service turned an income earner or a revenue generation institution???”

Sirh Batal wrote; “How I wish this is how they will renovate all our prison cells and improve the standard of feeding and also lab facilities”
