The next superfood drink? Here are the surprising health benefits of okra water

Okra water is rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, crucial for combating oxidative stress, says Akshita Reddy, chief nutritionist at Athreya Hospital, Bengaluru.

Okra, commonly known as bhindi, is a widely consumed vegetable across India. While consuming okra comes with several health benefits, as it is rich in nutrients and beneficial antioxidants, okra water comes with many advantages too.

A reel posted by Ebony Cierra on Instagram claimed that okra water is “packed with essential nutrients that can enhance your overall health and quality of life.”

To confirm this theory, indianexpress.com spoke to Akshita Reddy, chief nutritionist at Athreya Hospital, Bengaluru about the whether okra water can really have a positive effect on overall health.

Nutrient-dense, Okra water is rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, crucial for combating oxidative stress caused by free radicals, potentially lowering disease risk, and promoting overall health. These antioxidants, along with minerals such as potassium and magnesium, support a healthy immune system and can reduce inflammation.

High fibre content, it has a significant fibre content, primarily insoluble fibre, which aids in digestion by adding bulk to stools and promoting regular bowel movements. Additionally, the soluble fibre in okra water, in the form of mucilage, can soothe the digestive tract.

Rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, For individuals with diabetes or those at risk, okra water might offer benefits due to its content of flavonoids and polyphenols, which have been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and aid in blood sugar management.

Improved cognitive function, The presence of folate in okra water is also beneficial for mental health, aiding in brain cell development and possibly improving cognitive function.

Reddy informs that while the advantages of consuming okra water are plenty, everyone should be careful and consider that while okra water is usually safe to use, it contains fructans, which can cause digestive issues in people with specific intolerances.

He adds, “Excessive consumption might lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea or vomiting. Individuals with known allergies to okra should avoid okra water due to potential allergic reactions.”

Mitigating these risks involves consuming okra water in moderation, especially if you are unaware of how your body responds to fructans or if you have a sensitive digestive system.
