We Won’t Extend Contract Of Super Eagles Head Coach Jose Peseiro’ – NFF

According to reports, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will not renew the contract of Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro.

On May 15, 2022, Jose Peseiro reportedly signed a one-year contract with the NFF, which reportedly expired on Monday, May 15, 2023.

Despite the fact that the contract has expired, the NFF has yet to enter into negotiations with the Portuguese tactician.

Remember that Jose Peseiro took over for Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his previous position as the federation’s technical director.

Eguavoen took over as coach after Gernot Rohr was fired in December 2021. He assisted the team in reaching the round of 16 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, but they did not advance to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It is widely assumed that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have performed far below expectations under coach Jose Peseiro. Under his leadership, the team has only won three games out of eight, losing the other five. In addition, the team has only scored 15 goals and conceded 11.

Under Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles are having their worst run in 42 years, with Nigeria’s FIFA ranking dropping from 30th to 40th in the last six months.

Based on the foregoing, it is believed that Peseiro, who earns a whopping $70,000 (N32 million) per month as the Super Eagles’ head coach, is underperforming for his exorbitant pay.

As a result, his contract with the NFF may not be renewed. The fact that he was not appointed by the NFF’s current president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has made the decision to release the Portuguese tactician easier.

As I speak with you, there is no discussion between the NFF and Peseiro over his contract renewal, the board hasn’t discussed it yet,” A source told The Punch.

The NFF board will decide on the coaches of the national teams when their contracts expire because most of them were inherited from the previous board and funding has been a problem for the present board. Some of Ibrahim Gusau-led board members are asking why Peseiro was hired for such a huge amount of money and yet he’s not getting the right results nor is he playing good football. I don’t think we will retain Peseiro.
