Twitter Will Be Restored If Used Responsibly- Nigerian Government Insists

The Nigerian Government on Monday insisted that social media platform Twitter, would only be restored if a guarantee of responsible usage is given.

This was even as the Nigerian government noted that there is no definite timeline for lifting the ban

The Nigerian government had last weekend placed an indefinite suspension on the social media app, days after Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was deleted.

Although the government claims the suspension was made following concerns of tensions, fake news, many diplomatic missions had condemned the move by the Nigerian government.

The West African country made this known on Monday after a meeting with envoys through its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

Onyeama said that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.”

He further noted that the federal government never said Twitter is threatening the country, adding that the suspension of the platform was a measure taken to stop it from being used to destabilize the country.

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing.

“Why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilization and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he said.
