Russia Thrown Out Of World Cup

Russia have been disqualified from the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

FIFA and UEFA have released a joint statement confirming that Russian teams will not compete in their competitions.

It is a slight U-turn on FIFA’s stance from Sunday, in which they insisted the Russian national team would need to play under the guise of the ‘Football Union of Russia’.

FIFA announced a list of sanctions on Russia amid Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Those included official matches not being allowed to take place on Russian territory. “Home” fixtures would need to take place on neutral ground, while Russian flags and anthems were also banned.

However, condemnation of that stance has now prompted FIFA and UEFA to go further on those sanctions.

Russian teams, including both internationally and at club level, have been banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions, including the World Cup and the Europa League.
