Osimhen’s 22nd league goal hands Napoli title

Napoli have officially won the 2022-23 Serie A title and have been crowned champions of Italy for the first time since the 1989-90 season, having waited 33 years.

It could’ve already been celebrated last week with a win over Salernitana, but Boulaye Dia’s equaliser postponed the party.

The Partenopei’s extraordinary season has ended a 33-year wait since their last league title, led by the illustrious Diego Maradona on the pitch and masterminded by Alberto Bigon from the dugout.

This time around, it was the turn of Spalletti and his own cast of Neopolitan heroes, who have now written themselves into the history books.

Victor Osimhen has led from the front, and with 22 goals from his 26 Serie A appearances this campaign, is on track to win the golden boot at the end of the season as well.

There have been few better signings in recent years than that of Khvicha Kvaratskehlia, who has chipped in with 22 goal contributions in the league since his €11.5m arrival from Dinamo Batumi in July.

The supporting cast have been in magnificent form all season, too.

From Alex Meret in goal, Kim Min-jae and Amir Rrahmani at the back, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Mathias Olivera at full-back to the perfectly balanced midfield of Piotr Zielinski, Stanislav Lobotka and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Napoli have swept the competition aside.

Napoli are accompanied at the Dacia Arena by at least 14,000 fans, while another 50,000 packed out the Stadio Maradona to watch the game together on big screens.

In order to avoid crowd chaos, the squad is heading back to Naples tomorrow, where hundreds of thousands of supporters are expected to descend on the streets to congratulate their team.
