Nigeria launches first fully owned oil storage vessel, called Cawthorne, after fifty years.

Cawthorne, a 2.2 million barrel capacity Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel is a collaborative efforts of NNPC Limited, Sahara Group, Eroton Exploration and Production Company Limited and Bilton Energy.

The FSO is designed to ease crude oil operations by directly receiving, storing, and offloading crude oil to export tankers in the Nigeria’s OML-18 and surrounding assets which automatically cuts off challenges faced with the traditional pipeline, barge infrastructure, and ship-to-ship transfers which are slow and limited capacity.

The commissioning of Cawthorne is expected to increase production demand envisaged 50,000 barrel per day at the OML-18. It is also expected to cause a measurable reduction in oil spillage, theft, logistical bottlenecks, downtime and other associated challenges bemoaning the Nigeria’s Upstream sector.
