“As a small child whenever Tunde was playing chess, I pack everything away cause I wanted him to focus on school and be a doctor” – Tunde Onakoya’s father reveals in an interview

After the world stood in applause for Nigeria’s own Tunde Onakoya as he completed his mission of breaking the Guinness World Record of the longest chess marathon, his father shared in a recent interview how he was not initially in support of Tunde playing chess.

He recalled that Tunde loved the chess game since he was a child but he often discouraged him from playing it. Whenever the child was playing the game he would pack away the chess and firmly instruct him to go read his book.

His father disclosed that he had wanted Tunde to be a doctor when he grows up so he insisted he focuses on nothing but his education.

Realizing that every child has their unique talent and skill as Tunde became the World Chess master, he beseeched parents to allow their kids to follow their passion without serving as a hindrance to the actualization of their dreams.

Mr Onakoya further advises them not to discourage their kids as he did when Tunde was little.

He remarked that his son is a very determined child who sets his mind to things and does them to the letter and he is grateful to God that his son’s chess skill has made him so proud.
